MAKE SOME NOISE!

Meet Billy. Billy grew up in some mega-conservative, backwater, cesspool of religious fundamentalism and heteronormativity. Queer, anxious and so shy that he hides from his own shadow, the odds were stacked against him in many respects, but most of all in his dream of being a rockstar.

For conciseness' sake, we'll fast-forward many years, countless obstacles and nervous breakdowns later to the moment when Billy - after narrowly evading death by means of social darwinism - arrived in Berlin, a city whose bright, colorful, neon "Freaks, Geeks and Misfits Welcome" sign had beckoned him for years and years.

His first night on the town, he swallowed the lump in his throat that insisted he turn around and return to the safety and comfort of his bed. He answered that persistent doubt with a shot of tequila at a bar around the corner from his apartment, where he met Alex. After probing the shy newcomer for some time, Alex learned of his rockstar aspirations, and insisted he follow him to to a place called "Monster Ronsons" (gulp).

A few hours and several shots of tequila later, Alex had convinced Billy to put his name in for a song. His hand trembled as he handed the paper to the drag queen at the mixer. And for an excruciating hour, he waited, and waited, and sweat, and waited. Rednecks and bullies from his backwater hometown popped into his mind, shouting their convictions that he's never going to make it. And just when he thought he was going to pass out: he heard the drag queen say "Billy!"

He would hardly remember the next few minutes while he sang "Give me one moment in time." He was overcome with a euphoric rush - that karaoke kick - and was sure that Whitney's ghost was there, holding him upright so he didn't collapse. Flashing lights, blurred silhouettes of people in the crowd, sweat, music, and some words on a screen. And the music. The music, and a microphone. And the music stopped. And the monitor went black. The song was over, and nothing.... no one made a sound. And as he returned to his seat, no one made a sound. If you had asked why, they would have said they were waiting to see if they'd be called up next.

Billy went on to become a rockstar anyway and signed a multimillion dollar contract with Island Records, but that's besides the point. The point is remember to always MAKE SOME NOISE... you never know who's really on that stage. Could be, they've waited a lifetime...
